CTA Request Member Participation in Transport Canada – CTA Freight Activity Index

At the Calgary 2009 meeting of the CTA Board, the motion was approved and many volunteered to participate in a monthly survey conducted by Transport Canada in cooperation with CTA to measure the economic activity of the trucking industry.  The Board agreed that if the data could be provided electronically and restricted to the following data points: tonnage, the number of shipments and distance travelled, that a monthly survey would be beneficial and easy to manage.

Based on this direction, Transport Canada (TC) and the Canadian Trucking Alliance have developed the Transport Canada-CTA Freight Activity Index to measure the monthly economic activity in the Canadian trucking sector by asking for tonnage, the number of shipments and distance travelled.  A secure web site is being finalized that will allow the carriers participating in the survey to electronically transmit their information to Transport Canada in the same secure manner as a company would transmit their information to financial institutions.

At this point in the process we need carriers to submit to CTA their willingness to participate in the survey and provide contact information. This information will be shared with Transport Canada who will then begin the formal process of contacting the carriers to establish links to the survey. Please be assured that all names will remain confidential and that throughout this process corporate names shall never be published as part of this survey.

Once the survey begins, participants in the survey will be sent the results monthly --- fifteen days after the closing of the survey.  For example, data for the survey measuring January activity would be required to be reported no later than February 7th.  This will enable TC to report the results of the surveys to participating carriers by the middle of each month.
The survey will not begin until Transport Canada believes that the volunteers for the survey are a good representative sample of the trucking industry from across Canada. It is critical that Alliance members from across the country respond to this request.
